Honey Tasting: a one-of-a-kind exploration of one of Greece’s most ancient culinary treasures

Flavour profile, earthy notes, floral tones: all things you would expect to hear at a wine tasting. But did you know that honey can be as complex and fascinating? From fir to pine to floral, every jar tells a story.

When it comes to the history of honey in Greece, beekeeping is a tradition as ancient as the country itself: in fact, evidence of it has been found in Minoan artifacts dating as far back as 3000 A.D. In Greek mythology, bees were considered sacred and acted as messengers of the gods. Nymphs in the form of bees nursed the infant Zeus and “bee” was the title bestowed to the priestesses of Goddess Artemis.

Rich in nutrients and antioxidants, honey is a Greek diet staple for a reason, its production honed and refined through the centuries, leading to a wealth of unique varieties with surprising complexities.

It’s no wonder then that in recent years honey producers have begun offering tasting experiences, immersing their participants in honey’s rich history and allowing them to get a first-hand experience of the nuances and unique traits of each variety.

Want to see what all the buzz (excuse the pun) is about?

As it so happens, a honey tasting experience is one of the many activities you’ll get to take part in should you decide to join us on Nefeli Nine retreats’ all-new hiking and yoga retreat in the enchanting Agrafa mountains!

Here’s a glimpse of what to expect:

  • We begin with an introduction to honey, its history and the various uses and ways of production.

  • We will then discuss the issue of sustainable beekeeping and how honey can be produced without harming the bees.

  • After we’ve learned about honey’s use in our diet, the good part can now begin as the sampling starts! Greek honey varieties range from the subtle and ubiquitous pine honey to the wonderfully delicate fir, the bold and slightly bitter chestnut, the aromatic citrus, varieties of heathers and thyme. Our selection will include honeys local to the region with food pairings of homemade bread, cheese and local pies.

And an extra perk for those of us who will be visiting during the spring months: we will get to meet the tireless workers up close and in action, with a guided tour of the beehives!
