Mount Olympus has captivated people's imaginations for centuries. As the highest peak in Greece, it attracts hikers and adventurers from all corners of the globe. The very name evokes tales of Greek mythology, rich with gods and legends. However, Olympus is more than mythical stories; it offers a challenging hike with breathtaking views that reward every step.
My recent ascent to Mytikas last November reminded me of this fact. It inspired me to share my insights and tips to help you prepare for your hike. If you're considering this challenge, read on for a comprehensive guide to make your Mount Olympus adventure unforgettable!

Preparation and Planning
Best Time to Hike
The trek season for Mount Olympus runs from May through October. However, this can vary based on weather conditions. Given its popularity, if you're planning to stay at the refuges, consider booking your spots early to avoid disappointment!
Choosing the Right Route
Several trails lead to Mount Olympus, but most hikers choose either the Prionia route in the north or the Litochoro route in the south. On this climb, we opted for the route starting from the Christakis Refuge due to time constraints.
If possible, take the opportunity to explore the refuges on Olympus, especially “Giosos Apostolidis” on the Muses' Plateau. This refuge is a highlight of the trip, offering not only amazing food but also the chance to meet fellow adventurers and share stories along the way.

Physical Preparation
Get Fit Before You Go
Mount Olympus is not suitable for beginners. Physical fitness is crucial for a successful hike. I advise regular hikes leading up to your trip. Training for endurance will pay off, especially for first-time climbers.
If you're new to this kind of adventure, consider hiring a guide. They can provide assistance, especially if you're aiming to reach Mytikas.
Weather Awareness
The best conditions for climbing are from May to October when the weather stabilizes and the refuges are open. However, prepare for sudden weather changes. Conditions can become chilly or stormy as you ascend to higher elevations.

The Ascent
Starting Point – Christakis Refuge
The trail from Christakis Refuge offers one of the most rewarding experiences on Mount Olympus, particularly if you're short on time. The route is challenging, but it's manageable for those in good shape.
Getting to Christakis Refuge requires a 4x4 vehicle, but the scenic drive through rugged mountains is an adventure in itself. Once you're equipped and ready, it's time to tackle the first part of your climb!
Trekking Tips:
Maintaining a steady pace is critical. The initial ascent involves mixed terrain, so—don't rush! Take breaks to enjoy panoramic views of surrounding peaks and valleys, and keep your eyes peeled for local wildlife. Mountain goats and birds of prey thrive here, and you may even spot a majestic herd of wild horses, as we did!
Midway Point
As you ascend, the terrain grows rockier, requiring some scrambling. The higher you climb, the more exposed the trail becomes.
At this stage, you'll catch your first glimpse of the summit in the distance. Focus on this rewarding sight, but remember there's still a tough stretch ahead.

The Summit
The final push to the summit is the most demanding segment of the climb. A helmet is essential, so ensure you have one handy. Carefully navigate the loose rocks, paying close attention to your footing to avoid slipping.
Congratulations! You've reached the top! Here, you can soak in the indescribable experience of standing on Greece's highest peak. Enjoy stunning panoramic views of Thessaloniki, Chalkidiki, and the sparkling Aegean Sea stretching beyond the horizon.
As you begin your descent, remember that rushing can lead to mishaps—take your time. The descent is technical and can be tiring. Cherish the moments you've spent conquering this iconic mountain.
Time: 6 to 7 hours, depending on your pace.
